Sustainability in building design and construction is becoming a substantial consideration for all trades involved. If construction continues without thought towards depleting resources and harmful consequences, it will compromise future generations in fulfilling their own needs.
When you consider that 45% of all UK carbon emissions come from the built environment and 32% of all landfill is generated from construction projects, it is imperative to ensure we can help lessen the impact of construction.
The consumption of resources is a significant drain on our environment caused by construction, so it is important for architects, developers and designers to lessen the impact of their projects by carefully considering the selection of materials used on their projects.
When it comes to flooring options, we know that wood is simply the best option for any development, and we can ensure our flooring is fully certified as being sourced from well managed and legal sustainable forests.
Wood is the only renewable choice of building material for flooring. Plastics are derived from fossil fuels, concrete and other forms of flooring can damage our environment through the energy it takes for their production.
Wood is a renewable, natural resource that naturally grows in abundance. The production of wood flooring also uses less energy in its processing methods than any other construction material.
For example, it takes 5 times more energy to produce 1 tonne of cement, 24 times more energy for 1 tonne of steel, and 126 times for 1 tonne of aluminium.
Young trees also absorb more carbon dioxide than mature ones, so it makes sense to harvest older trees and plant two new ones for every one tree felled.
The Solid Wood Flooring Company have long been committed to only using sustainable timber for our wood flooring as we are very conscious of the environment.
As a company, we are proud to be fully FSC and PEFC certified and are keen supporters of the WWF’s Save the Forests campaign. We are also committed members of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) and implement their Environmental Code of Practice and responsible purchasing policy (RPP). The RPP is a key issue in the timber industry today as it will ensure that all forests will eventually become totally sustainable, and over time the rain forest will get replanted.
Here at the Solid Wood Flooring Company, we only supply Oak, Bamboo, Walnut and Canadian Maple timber flooring from sustainable sources and make sure not to use endangered or exotic wood species. We only manufacture our own wooden flooring and can therefore control the sources of our raw material unlike many our competitors who buy from traders.
We find that our clients – from the architects of large residential developments to interior designers of the latest restaurants – are all concerned with sustainability, wanting to ensure the building materials they use have less impact on our planet.
