NWA, a practice leading the way in data centre design, are aiding the development of KLON-06, a data centre in Slough owned by high performance infrastructure operator, Kao Data As part of the expansion of its IT capacity, extensive remodelling is taking place, with the refurbishment of an existing building, including the construction and fit-out of additional technical data suites.
The facility will include 3500 sq.m of new white space across 2 floors, along with the insertion of a new mezzanine level. A stripped back façade and building line will enable the facility to accommodate highly resilient, hybrid cooling and backup power generation within its fabric.
With Kao Data’s key emphasis on sustainability and their net zero commitments, meeting key environmental criteria has remained a fundamental focus throughout the design. Each backup generator will be powered by hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO), which reduces 90% of carbon emissions as well as other harmful greenhouse gases (GHGs). The facility will also host a highly efficient hybrid cooling system, ultra-energy efficient, lithium-ion (Li-Ion) UPS, and will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
Nicholas Webb, Managing Director, NWA said, “We are thrilled to be partnering with Kao Data on the extensive re-model of their high-performance KLON-06 facility. The expansion of this data centre, one of the largest in Slough, grants us the opportunity to bring our knowledge and expertise to help deliver a high-quality facility.”
“We’re delighted to be working with NWA to design the next stage of our KLON-06 facility in Slough and bring its technical capabilities in line with the rest of our high-performance data centres,” said Gérard Thibault, CTO, Kao Data. “NWA have worked tirelessly to ensure our sustainability and technical standards have been incorporated into the design and their team have been exceptional to work with.”
Strong design is a crucial element of any successful data centre and forms a critical foundation for the buildout of Kao Data’s high performance KLON-06 facility. With technological demands accelerating year-on-year, the need to house high density, industrial scale infrastructure within a technically advanced facility is paramount and will be essential to futureproof Kao Data’s customers’ mission-critical environments.
