The Percy Gee Building, at Leicester University, named after a former benefactor and chairman of the former college, has undergone an exciting £13.1 million refurbishment and expansion. This is a multi-purpose facility, home to the Students’ Union, a venue for informal learning and a centre for refreshment and eating. The main hub of the building is the ‘Campus Kitchen’, a new food court which provides a range of varied cuisines for staff, students and visitors. It’s an interior occupied by Millennials and Gen Z and the décor was chosen to reflect their styles and trends
Reflecting industrial metal remains popular
By using Amron Welltec “wave” or “corrugated” profiled aluminium sheet on interior walls, something new and unexpected was injected into the kitchen space. To take this ‘jolt away from the norm’ still further the designers envisaged not shiny metal, but the appearance of weathered and rusted metal – an industrial ‘vibe’. Powdertech Corby’s Collections include finishes which are more exciting than standard powder coating colours. Some of the finishes replicate patination/rust on metal, giving a ‘Corten’ appearance but with no rusty residue which could mark clothing and other surfaces.
A wide choice of finishes with a difference
A Corten appearance was exactly what the client was looking for and ‘Firebox’ was chosen from the Evolution/Rust collection. This gives a very natural ‘rusted’ look with no two panels looking the same. Powdertech applied Firebox to 80 m2 of material used to line the walls and over-counter area of the Campus Kitchen. This finish can be used internally and also externally with excellent protection against corrosion . Colour, gloss stability and adhesion are guaranteed for up to 25 years. Only minimal maintenance is required, with water and a mild detergent.
