WITH more friends and family visiting over the festive season, new research has revealed the lengths Brits go to with cleaning their home.

The research, based on a survey of 2,000 people, conducted by online electricals retailer, AO.com, found that a staggering 89% of Brits said they clean their home more around the Christmas period.

In fact, the research identified that Brits spend four and a half hours on average cleaning their home for Christmas day.

Meanwhile, men revealed they spend over five hours cleaning ahead of Christmas compared to just four hours for women.

When quizzed on the reasons for this, more than half of Brits (56%) said the top reason was so they can relax once the home is fully cleaned for Christmas.

Just under half (47%) said it was both because guests will be staying over and also because lots of people will be coming in and out of the house at Christmas.

This was closely followed by 44% who want to make space for decorations and 43% who clean the home to make space to put out presents.

The top tasks that featured in the pre-Christmas clean included dusting surfaces (77%), vacuuming carpets (75%), dusting furniture (70%), mopping floors (67%) and cleaning or disinfecting bathrooms (64%).

Despite this, many of us cut corners to speed up our Christmas clean including hiding mess (40%), wiping areas instead of scrubbing (29%) and using a freshening spray instead of cleaning or laundering items (24%).

David Lawson, Managing Director of AO.com said: “Christmas is the time of year where we spend the most time with our friends and family. It’s therefore no surprise to see how important the pre-Christmas clean is as we welcome more visitors to our homes over this period. Cleaning doesn’t need to be a chore though – we’ve got a wide variety of appliances to help you get the job done in no time, so you can relax and enjoy the festivities together.”

Around 1 in 4 (28%) said they hadn’t ever hired someone to help clean their home before Christmas but wish they had.
