• 64% of Brits don’t know how to carry out simple household tasks
• 72% turn to a family member for help
• Changing a lightbulb, cleaning a hoover filter and cleaning out a coffee machine were revealed as the top household struggles
EVEN THE simplest of household tasks are proving difficult for British adults, new research has revealed.
A survey of 1,000 UK adults carried out by lighting supplier LED Hut found that 64% of Brits don’t know how to carry out simple household tasks, with more than half (51%) admitting that they will turn to someone else for help.
Family members are the first person on speed dial, as 72% of those who turn to someone else ask relatives for help to get the job done. 68% said they turn to the internet for advice, while nearly half (46%) will turn to friends in their time of need.
The survey further revealed which household tasks Brits struggle with the most, with changing a lightbulb appearing as the most popular job (71%).
Of those polled, 59% said they don’t know how to clean out their hoover filter and more than 1 in 2 (53%) don’t know how to deep clean their coffee machine.
Changing the fuse in a plug was next to appear on the list of jobs Brits struggle with, while nearly half (45%) don’t know how to bleed a radiator.
Next on the list for 38% of respondents was unclogging a drain and the same number said they struggle to organise their recycling.
36% said they don’t know how to clean their washing machine, while 1 in 4 said they would need help to reset their boiler. Completing the list for 22% of Brits was putting up a shelf.
Alex Nathan, Ecommerce Manager at LED Hut commented: “It seems that general household knowledge, maintenance and skills are holding less importance in today’s generation, with a high proportion of people relying on the aid of family or the internet for assistance.
“Learning how to complete tasks around the home is a fantastic life lesson and is something you can share with younger generations. Turning to others might seem easier, but why not ask someone to show you how to complete the task so you can learn a new skill and pass your knowledge on to others.”
