A SPECIAL fund to combat crime and anti-social behaviour in Middlesbrough has seen its first CCTV cameras installed.
The Mayor’s CCTV Small Grant scheme was launched in August, with residents invited to bid for up to £300 towards the crime-fighting kit.
And this week the first camera was installed in the town’s Surrey Street, with Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston dropping by to see the work being carried out.
The £10,000 scheme – supported with Safer Streets funding from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner – attracted more than 500 applications from across Middlesbrough.
The first cameras are being installed by Oliver Wentworth of Wentworth Security and Electrical.
Welcoming the latest move, Mayor Preston re-stated his commitment to tacking crime and anti-social behaviour head-on.
Mr Preston said: “Decent, law-abiding Middlesbrough people have an absolute right to live free from crime, intimidation and anti-social behaviour and I’m committed to doing everything I can to stamp it out.
“It’s unacceptable, and has no place in any community.
“CCTV will help us catch those responsible and act as a deterrent, so it’s great to see the cameras being installed.
“They’re the first of many and I know they’ll make a real difference.”
