Whether specifying for a refurbishment or new build project, folding and sliding door (FSD) hardware systems can enhance the design features of a building by maximising on space and natural light.

External FSDs are ideal for merging indoor and outdoor spaces as during warm weather, opening up the doors can create a transition from home to garden allowing light, air and access to the outdoors. In winter, when specified with secure glass doors, they allow for natural light to flood into a room, offering excellent sight lines and creating an open feel.

A stunning new build family home constructed from timber framing, clad in larch and roofed with zinc, specified P C Henderson sliding door hardware systems for its central dining space. The large sliding doors leading to the dining room utilised P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide Base System for its performance and ability to be housed into a bespoke glazed timber screen and sill system. The doors open up the side of the house and are used daily during the summer months for ventilation and access to external terracing, seamlessly joining the indoor and outdoor spaces.

P C Henderson’s external sliding hardware was ideal for the project as it is designed to accommodate large door leaves of up to 3m x 3m. The system also provides superior weather resistance due to its bottom pad and anti-derail plate which provides a secure seal between the central meeting point stiles and the threshold. To further meet the demands of British weather, hardware components are be made of 316 marine grade stainless steel for a high level of corrosion resistance.

Another project, featuring a school in London, wanted to maximise on natural light with the use of sliding door gear and installing a system utilising P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide hardware. The hardware allows the sliding doors to function with a simple turn of the handle to unlock the door from its weather tight position. The doors then slide easily on the carriages with minimal friction and can be lowered and locked at any position by moving the handle down. The system can hold doors up to 300kg and offers excellent security and weather resistance with a choice of three CE rated weather levels.

Exterior FSDs can help realise the look and feel desired by a client but due to the opening size and considering the multiple points to secure, there is a need to ensure that the hardware system provided has the high performance of a secure solution.

P C Henderson systems are subject to rigorous testing such as PAS 24 and EN1627 for burglar resistance. Their hardware is accredited by the official UK Police flagship initiative, Secured by Design (SBD). Products carrying the SBD certification have been rigorously tested to withstand forced entry. Specifying hardware which meets security standards adds peace of mind and safety to occupiers and the property to meet aesthetic and functional requirements.
