BRIGGSAMASCO SUPPLIES GREEN ROOF SOLUTION AS LANDMARK SITE UNDERGOES DRAMATIC REDEVELOPMENT

The UK’s leading national commercial roofing company, BriggsAmasco, supplied a multiple-roof system to help transform one of London’s most recognisable landmarks into a highly-desirable mixed-use development.

Having been involved in the installation of green roofs for a number of years, as well as providing training in the concept and applications of the systems, BriggsAmasco was well-placed to supply a smart, sustainable, waterproof roofing solution for the breath-taking redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station site in south-west London. Aesthetically-pleasing and environmentally-friendly, green roofs encourage a sense of health and well-being in a building’s occupants as well as adding a biodiverse layer to an otherwise grey, lifeless space.  These properties proved ideal for the Battersea Power Station project – the epitome of a thoroughly-modern, residential and commercial complex.

On behalf of main contractors, Carillion, BriggsAmasco was selected to install a multiple level roof system for phase one of an eight-phase project which will eventually transform the derelict 39-acre site into a thriving mini-city, replete with retail stores, restaurants and bars, a six-acre park, a community theatre, and residential apartments.

The initial phase involves 12 high-rise residential blocks to the west of the site. It comprises 850 residential apartments, as well as retail facilities, theatre space, business studios and two levels of parking. BriggsAmasco supplied six green roofs and two lower – level roofs consisting of limestone paving.

For the green roofs, a Hydrotech Monolithic hot-melt membrane was fully-bonded to the substrate. The system provides excellent root protection and allows immediate access to waterproofed areas. Its membrane is designed to last a building’s lifetime, offering seamless, waterproof protection for podiums and highly-detailed water feature projects. Rigid extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) provided the membrane’s insulation layer. Due to its compressive strength, XPS is ideal for specialist applications such as car park decks and inverted roofing. A plug plant system constituted the roof’s sustainable, green finish.

BriggsAmasco completed the complex, multi-roof installation in April 2017. Its highly-skilled and experienced on-site teams ensured the project was delivered within the agreed timeframe and to the client’s complete satisfaction. Their superb dedication and level of craftsmanship has played a vital part in the creation of a stunning development that perfectly suits the city’s residential, commercial, social and ecological 21st century needs.
