Kawneer systems installed on petrochemical giant’s landmark HQ

INEOS’ award-winning new HQ features Kawneer glazing on all four elevations.

Architects for the newly-completed £20 million INEOS HQ in Grangemouth turned to Kawneer glazing systems when addressing the specific engineering requirements for a building adjacent to a chemical plant.

Kawneer’s AA®110 zone-drained curtain walling with 65mm sightlines, top-hung casement windows and commercial entrance doors were specified by Michael Laird Architects for the landmark headquarters at INEOS’ 1,700-acre site in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire.

During 2015, INEOS unveiled plans to build a new state-of-the-art HQ for its Olefins and Polymers UK business in Grangemouth as part of an ongoing investment in its estate. In the space of just 12 months the construction phase was completed and the building’s keys handed over.

The steel-frame building on two hectares was built over four floors totalling 6,490m2 by BAM Construction on the site of former industrial buildings. All four elevations feature the Kawneer systems which were installed by specialist sub-contractor CMS Windows after fabrication at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Cumbernauld.

Providing high-quality office space, for the first time in many years, the INEOS O&P UK business at Grangemouth has now brought its employees together in a way that suits its new business operation. It will improve productivity and collaboration, with a single office that is built for today’s business needs.

The HQ building, which won an Architectural Excellence Award (Commercial Buildings) in the Scottish Property Awards, includes meeting rooms and conference facilities located on the ground floor and three floors of open-plan office space above.

Michael Laird director Jeremy Scott said: “A feature of the HQ design was the provision of large expanses of glazing to allow light into the office and atrium spaces. The performance of the glazing systems was therefore a key requirement when considering the specific engineering associated with constructing an office building adjacent to the chemical plant. Kawneer glazing provided us with the perfect solution.”

Mark Clemson, sales and marketing director at Kawneer, said: “We were delighted to have been selected to provide glazing systems to what has now become a landmark building in Grangemouth. Kawneer has a long tradition of manufacturing and delivering high-quality glazing systems to the construction industry.

“Our highly-experienced team met with Michael Laird Architects in advance of the construction phase of the project to discuss the specific requirements for glazing a building adjacent to a petrochemical plant and delivered a solution that met these exacting standards.”
